Museum collection

The collection of the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam contains more than 300,000 objects and historical photographs. This website enables you to browse these collections and view the related documentation. The documentation has been subdivided in separate categories, being either Constituents, Events, exhibitions or literature.

For museum professionals, the website may be consulted via the professional site, for which a password is required. Using the professionals’ site is restricted to (ethnological) museum staff, and scholars conducting research on the Tropenmuseum collections. They can be capacitated to browse the entire collection from their personal workstation.

What can be found?
Catalogued and accorded objects, equipped with a digital image, can be found on the public website. Added to that, the professional’s website shows those objects still to be catalogued and captured in digital image. At this moment the Tropenmuseum’s entire collection contains over 254,000 pieces, of which 155,000 are Material Culture (objects), 89,000 are Photographic material (photographs, albums, slides, negatives etc.), and 10,000 other imagery (drawings, paintings, graphics, documents etc.).

Obviously, confidential information is not available in this section either.
