Research workshop on health-related stigma and discrimination

Organized by the Royal Tropical Institute
29 November to 2 December 2004, Soesterberg, the Netherlands

About the workshop
ICRAAS was established as an initiative of participants of an international workshop on health-related stigma and discrimination, held November 29 to December 2, 2004 in the Netherlands.

Stigma researchers from across the world working in various fields of public health (HIV/AIDS, leprosy, TB, mental health, disability and Buruli ulcer) attended the workshop.

During this workshop, knowledge, experience and research findings from several major public health fields were reviewed. Participants agreed that pooling research findings and experiences offers great potential for the fight against stigma, facilitating the development of common stigma reduction strategies and interventions and common stigma assessment instruments.

During and in preparation for the workshop, priority issues for research and specific research questions were formulated and a start was made with an inventory of stigma reduction strategies and interventions, needs for stigma measurement and available stigma assessment tools.
