Marije Boomsma has studied international relations, development economics and sustainable business at the Universities of Twente, London and Cambridge. She has over 10 years of work experience in the private and semi-public sector in Europe, Africa and Asia, including long-term experience in Laos and Vietnam. Her expertise lies in sustainable business development through chain development and business engineering. She has professional skills in market research, business planning, training and facilitation and project and team management.

Prior to working for the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT), Mrs Boomsma worked for almost 4 years in South East Asia as a market development consultant. In Vietnam she was a freelance consultant for several international organizations and donor organizations on value chain analysis and market development, including SNV, the International Labour Organization, Oxfam Hong Kong/World Bank and Traidcraft. In Laos, Mrs Boomsma worked for Arcadis Euroconsult/BMB on local private sector development. Mrs Boomsma has also worked as a management consultant in the Netherlands, advising Dutch enterprises in exploring market opportunities in African countries.

To date Mrs Boomsma is working as a senior advisor on sustainable economic development at KIT. Her work includes advising European businesses (amongst others Dutch spice traders) in making supply chains in developing countries more sustainable; business engineering of sustainable agri businesses in Africa and Latin America; the development of practical quick scan tools for businesses to enhance sustainable business. Next to advisor Marije has experience as team coordinator.
