WHO Collaborating Centre for HRH

The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated KIT a collaborating centre for the training, retention and motivation of health care workers in developing countries.

Better health care is crucial to achieving the Millennium Development Goals and the availability of qualified staff is a key factor in achieving the targets related to tuberculosis, AIDS and malaria, and the reduction of infant and maternal mortality. But in many countries there is an acute shortage of qualified and motivated health care workers, and quality health care is under enormous pressure.

As a collaborating centre on HRH, KIT advises countries on policy, planning, capacity development and other strategic aspects of human resource management in the international health care sector. KIT also conducts research and develops innovative methodologies for capacity development. Special attention is paid to motivating staff, reducing staff turnover and reducing migration.

The WHO Collaborating Centre aims to:

  1. Provide country support to HRH policy and strategy development
  2. Conduct research in HRH
  3. Develop innovative approaches to capacity building
  4. Provide advice on managing exit from the health workforce (e.g. migration)
