Indra Bergval, MSc is a junior scientist and PhD student working at KIT Biomedical Research on the molecular aspects of drug resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This work involves studying how different bacterial strains adapt to antibiotic exposure and studying their genetic adaptation. Differences in the range and rate of specific mutations are investigated. These studies are important to understand how mycobacteria adapt to antibiotic exposure.

As part of this work a Mycobacterium-specific MLPA (Multiplex Ligation Probe Assay) is being developed to screen for mutations know to be associated with specific bacterial characteristics. This multiplex assay may also be useful for epidemiological typing and the characterisation of patient isolates.
