Anna Laven holds a MA in Environmental Management from the VU University Amsterdam and a MA in Political Science, with a specialization in International Environmental Relations and Sustainable Development, from the University of Amsterdam (UvA). Currently she is finalizing her PhD in International Development Studies at the Amsterdam Institute for Metropolitan and International Development Studies at UvA.

Anna has expertise in analysing global value chains, governance processes and social relations and in identifying more inclusive upgrading strategies for smallholders. She has professional skills in operational research (quantitative and qualitative), multi-stakeholder processes, setting up business ventures and lecturing and supervision of MA students.

Before joining KIT, Ms Laven worked for three years at a Dutch NGO as a policy-maker, coordinating research activities and setting up activities in Belgium and Spain in cooperation with public, private and non-profit partners. She has been a volunteer at the Latin American Department of a Dutch NGO, and has worked as freelance consultant/writer for different organizations, including universities, government and the private sector.

Anna joined KIT in 2008 as an advisor in sustainable chain development. Current projects include documenting KIT’s experiences with pro-poor business engineering; doing a feasibility study on biological cocoa production and cocoa export in West Africa; and the integration of gender in value chain analysis and training.
