World premiere 'Opera Java'

'Opera Java' is a bold combination of classical and contemporary dance with other art forms: gamelan music, song, theatre, visual arts and installations. The result is a magnificent and modern visual and musical show.

In honour of KIT's 100th anniversary, the Tropentheater has designed this show, together with the producer, to match the possibilities of the Lichthal at the Tropenmuseum. The show is also the opening act of the International Gamelan Festival Amsterdam 2010.

'Opera Java' is the theater version of the film 'Opera Jawa' (2006) by controversial Indonesian director Garin Nugroho. Nugroho is the most renowned independent filmmaker of Indonesia at present. The film has been traveling all the international festivals.

The show is a modern musical version of 'The Abduction of Sita', the central story in the famous Hindu epic the Ramayana. The story tells about the passionate love triangle between the poor couple Setio and Siti, and the rich butcher Ludiro, which leads to conflict and violence.

After the premiere in Amsterdam, the opera will tour Europe and Asia.
