Collaboration between Sudan and Royal Tropical Institute
4 May 2012A delegation from the Federal Ministry of Health of Sudan visited the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) from 1-2 May. Mr Nazar Elfaki, the Director of Policy and Planning for Human Resource Development at the Federal Ministry of Health of Soedan, was a visiting Erasmus Mundus scholar at KIT in February 2012. This week, he visited KIT with his colleague Dr Elmuez Eltayeb Ahmed, Director General of Human Resources for Health Development of the same ministry. -

Women’s rights organizations hit by ‘double whammy’
8 March 2011Women’s rights organizations around the world are suffering from the double impact of changes to aid modalities and cuts to development funding. Recent research has shown that grass-roots women’s organizations are cutting back on programmes and staff. According to the Royal Tropical Institute, “in 2011, the year of the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day, work on women’s rights is suffering, despite donors’ repeated claims that they are committed to gender equality.” -

The portal offers timely and informative content on the issue. The website serves as a platform for sharing knowledge on the current use, potential and limitations of mHealth in low-resource settings and allows greater interaction with its users. -
Socially-responsible peanuts from Bolivia
16 February 2011The Netherlands' largest supermarket chain, Albert Heijn, has a new product on its shelves: the Oerpinda or 'Original Peanut'. Distributed by Intersnack under its Jack Klijn label, the peanut is being marketed on the basis of two unique features: quality and 'fair trade'. -
Dutch senator joins Royal Tropical Institute
18 January 2011Prof. dr. Eric Smaling has been appointed the new director of KIT Development Policy & Practice, the Royal Tropical Institute’s main department for development cooperation. Smaling says he intends to join the institute in the ongoing public debate around development cooperation, 'especially since this area is so much under attack socially and politically. Given its history and stature, KIT has a role to play in this debate.' -
New dossier: World Health Champion Game
23 December 2010The World Health Champion Game has been developed by KIT Development Policy and Practice in collaboration with KIT Information & Library Services, with the support of the Ministry of Development Cooperation. The primary target group being participants of Master’s programmes in Public & International Health. The dossier introduces the Game and presents the PDFs of the board, the instructions and rules, and the questions and answers of the game. -

30th GOLAMA course at KIT
9 November 2010For the 30th time, the GOLAMA course was held at KIT from 1-5 November. This interactive, simulation-based course trains Dutch military physicians and other medical military staff in the essentials of public health activities, such as how to respond to epidemics or implement prevention programmes. -
First international spices conference a success
22 October 2010On 12 October the Sustainable Spice Conference took place at KIT. More than a hundred people attended the conference, among them representatives of various segments of the spice chain. The aim of the conference was to answer the question: What are the conditions that lead to sustainability of the entire spice chain – from small farmers to international spice companies? Dialogue and trust proved to be essential to bridge the gap between the different interests of different parties. -
Global Maternal Health Conference
2 September 2010Every year, over half a million women die because of complications during pregnancy or childbirth and many more become permanently disabled. Although most of these deaths and disabilities are preventable, the Millennium Development Goal with the least success to date is MDG5, the reduction of maternal death. -
Role of the Ghanaian government in the cocoa sector
1 July 2010State intervention can benefit Ghanaian cocoa farmers, despite the trend towards privatization. But the system in Ghana also has considerable disadvantages. These are the findings of researcher Anna Laven after years of study in Ghana, the second-largest cocoa producer in the world. Laven defended her doctoral thesis 'The risks of inclusion. Shifts in governance processes and upgrading opportunities for small-cocoa farmers in Ghana' on 29 June at the University of Amsterdam.
