ICT for development

ICT4D in the field

A Resource of Expertise on ICT and Development

Introduction
Information and communication have been KIT’s major strengths since its founding in 1910; strengths which are still at the core of the organisation’s current ICT expertise. In the past decade, KIT has successfully availed this expertise for the benefit of ICT projects in developing countries. ICT has, in the process, been defined in its broadest meaning - using a wide range of appropriate technologies. The expertise that KIT currently offers includes, but is not limited to, the following areas:

  • Advisory services related to ICT strategy and technology
  • Training in the use of ICT ‘tools’
  • Evaluation of hard and software infrastructures
  • Information and communication design
  • IT-Project management
  • E-Learning

KIT uses and re-uses the knowledge and expertise it accumulates to design workshops, training and seminars to support its partners, further enhancing their capacity. In this way, each project opens new possibilities for future ones.

Approach
KIT believes that ICT can only be a powerful instrument for development if it is grounded in local realities and cultures. ICT should not be seen as an end in itself but as a tool, to build capacity, amplify voices, facilitate sharing of knowledge and empower people. KIT, therefore, uses a multidisciplinary approach in its projects. It does not only focus on technology but also puts an emphasis on human and social aspects. Our objective is to work and learn together in development and create improvements through cooperation and mutual understanding.

In most projects, the major part of the knowledge exchange will be through Internet communication. Face-to -face meetings of local staff and their KIT counterparts are, however, considered crucial in establishing personal relations; it is the foundation of every project. Designing ICT solutions relevant to developing countries requires a firm grounding in the realities of these countries. Through intense cooperation with partners and taking both technical and social realities into account, KIT aspires to achieve durable and rewarding results.

For whom?
Depending on availability of funds, KIT will work with all partners whose objective is to improve ICT infrastructure and knowledge for development.
