Mission of KIT Biomedical Research
In conformity with the mission of KIT the aim of KIT Biomedical Research (KIT BR) is to improve the quality and effectiveness of health provision and services for people in low and medium income countries (LMIC). We achieve this through interrelated laboratory and applied activities, including research, advice and capacity building.
Our focus is on detection, management and control of infection and disease.
Our objectives are:
- to develop, manufacture and implement, together with local public and private partners, diagnostics and diagnostic methods for sustainable use in resource-limited situations;
- to generate, evaluate and translate knowledge and evidence for improved detection, diagnosis, management and control of infectious diseases;
- to build sustainable local capacity through training and collaboration in long-term partnerships;
- and to advise on national and international health related policies.
KIT BR is distinctive in that health research is viewed and practiced from a health system approach and that therefore all its activities are performed in cohesion. Furthermore, KIT BR is part of the bigger multidisciplinary KIT, which provides opportunities void to other knowledge institutes (but are not exploited at potential scale).
Activities
The activities conducted by KIT BR are diagnostic test development, research on diagnostic test use (including pathogen typing and resistance studies as these are very important for treatment decisions and thus good patient management) and enhancing the supportive environment for proper diagnosis and research (capacity building through knowledge transfer and advisory services).
Target groups
The related products and services primarily serve the following groups:
- health authorities and people working in healthcare in developing countries;
- patients (including mothers and children);
- centres for medical research and medical services in developing countries;
- multilateral organizations and NGOs.
Outputs
The usefulness of our outputs is ensured by conducting needs assessment and implementation in collaboration with users and other stakeholders (such as WHO and FIND, MoH) to take account of local circumstances.
KIT BR has a unique position in the field of essential diagnostics: new scientific developments in the field of diagnostics are developed into products and policies, which are relevant to and applicable in developing countries. KIT BR has record of accomplishment and international reputation in the field of essential diagnostics.
KIT Biomedical Research laboratory
KIT BR has been accredited for particular requirements for quality and competence according to the ISO 15189 standard for medical laboratories and has fully equipped BSL3, BSL2 and BSL1 laboratories to its availability. KIT BR harbours the WHO/FAO/OIE International Reference Laboratory for Leptospirosis.
