BR Research

With our research we aim to generate, evaluate and translate knowledge and evidence for improved detection, diagnosis, management and control of infectious diseases.

We continuously try to maximize our knowledge, expertise and experience in the field of essential diagnostics and apply these both to clinical practice as well as in the public health sector.

KIT BR has been accredited according to the particular requirements for quality and competence of ISO 15189 standard for medical laboratories.
KIT BR has fully equipped BSL3, BSL2 and BSL1 laboratories to its availability.
KIT BR harbours the WHO/FAO/OIE International Reference Laboratory for Leptospirosis.

KIT BR performs interdisciplinary research with a focus on pathogen-environment interaction; research topics include:

  • Molecular mechanisms of drug resistance (mainly for TB and malaria)
  • Molecular epidemiology and pathogenesis (among others: TB, brucellosis, typhoid, leptospirosis)
  • Environmental factors influencing disease patterns (among others: urbanization, global warming, pollution of food and water)
  • Mother and child health (among others: malaria in pregnancy, childhood TB)
  • Research in the field of Evidence-based Health Care

In addition, we perform research supporting our diagnostic development activities;
this research includes biomarker discovery, test platform development (incl. nanotechnology), diagnostic (field) evaluation and cost-efficiency studies.

Most research activities take place in international and interdisciplinary collaborations, including public and private partnerships.

Outputs of our research are:

  • publications (incl. systematic reviews);
  • advice/recommendations;
  • biomarkers and other biomaterials;
  • applicable tools for diagnosis and detection of diseases for sustainable use in resource limited situations.

Outcomes of our research efforts are:

  • improved scientific understanding;
  • provision of the evidence-base for improved detection, treatment and prevention of (infectious) diseases.

Services and capacity building
The expertise, experience and facilities of KIT BR are deployed to:

  • facilitate contract research (diagnostic product development, diagnostic trials);
  • give policy-supportive advice in research capacity strengthening;
  • build up sustainable laboratory capacity in low and middle income countries.
