Rights and resources: the effects of financing on organizing for women’s rights

Conference dates: 21-22 March 2011
Duration: 2 days
Location: Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) Amsterdam

This conference shared the results of a recent research project, Mobilizing for women’s rights: the role of resources, which studied the effects of financing on organizing for women’s rights. Conference participants also discussed ways to enhance resource mobilization.

Background

The achievement of gender equality is one of the eight Millennium Development Goals and is also vital to all the others. Several studies have shown that resource mobilization and financial sustainability for women’s movements worldwide is a significant issue for women’s empowerment. It is therefore of great concern that the restructuring of aid following the Paris Declaration (2005) has had less-than-positive effects on the financing for gender equality and the empowerment of women.

Conference aims

The aims of the conference were to:

  • Share research findings as a basis for a discussion on resource mobilization for women’s rights and gender equality
  • Identify areas of collaboration between donors and women’s rights organizations
  • Strategize together on ways to enhance resource mobilization

Participants

The conference brought together:

  • women’s rights organizations from Ghana and Bangladesh
  • gender networks from around the world
  • global and bilateral donor organizations
  • international non-governmental organizations (INGO)
