Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a powerful tool for planning and assessment of health interventions and is increasingly recognized as an essential tool in disease control. GIS can effectively be applied to improve health care provision in disease control programmes, where new perspectives and approaches are needed.

This course provides knowledge and skills on how GIS can be used for:

  • epidemiological assessment of patterns of disease in time and place;
  • assessment of accessibility to health care facilities;
  • visualizing Health Management Information – for monitoring and evaluation of programme performance such as programme indicators, human resources, and laboratory performance indicators;
  • basic spatial analysis.

Furthermore the participants will be assisted in setting up a personal GIS to manage their data and to perform a suite of novel spatial analysis techniques.

The course will use ArcViews/ArcGIS. Participants will obtain a one-year student licence of ArcGIS (ArcView).
