Development of training programmes
Training institutes are facing growing demands to deliver high quality, in-service and postgraduate training programmes in a cost effective way. Better management of training activities and an orientation to the market and to the demands of trainees and employers are requirements to survive.
Approach
KIT offers technical assistance in the various stages of developing and implementing a training programme. Together with our partners, we create or adapt existing training development tools to fit the local context. Facilitating this process in order to build local capacity is key to our approach.
Focal points
Our activities include research, advisory services and support for capacity building. In addition, we accompany institutions in their efforts to promote their training programmes in increasingly competitive markets. See also: Institutional Strengthening.
We facilitate or carry out:
- Training needs assessments and performance analyses
- Curriculum development
- Training of trainers
- Curriculum review
- Student assessments and teacher evaluations
- Quality assurance of training, including monitoring and evaluation
- Development of learning materials
- Training for e-learning and development of e-learning materials
Example
District Health Management course - Zambia (Phase II: 2001 – 2008)
A training needs assessment was carried out with regard to attributions, tasks and performance of district health managers in the context of the decentralization and health reforms that took place in Zambia. A nine-month curriculum was developed that included both class modules and three long periods of practical fieldwork, supervised by provincial health offices. Together with the organizing institute, support materials were developed and instructors and supervisors given appropriate training.
KIT is involved in backstopping the organizing institute - the National Institute of Public Administration - and the commissioning organization - the Ministry of Health. This includes developing student assessments, participating in participant oral examinations, developing student portfolios that include reports and proposals on common planning and management tasks, and performing an impact assessment of the training. A training needs assessment for district hospital managers has also been carried out.
