Institutional strengthening for health training institutes

Training institutions such as public health schools, medical faculties, paramedical schools and management training institutes are responsible for equipping service providers with the competencies they need to provide quality health services.

These training institutes can improve their performance by investigating the health sector's training needs and becoming involved in health sector planning. In the face of competition, they need to develop a strong profile, with a vision of their training methodology and clearly defined target groups. They need mechanisms to ensure the quality of their courses and provide evidence of the link between the courses offered and the needs of the health sector.

Approach

We support training institutes in carrying out institutional development and staff development. Support is demand-driven and based on a situational analysis. We focus on North-South and South-South collaboration in order to foster the exchange of experiences and create broader learning opportunities.

Focal points

Institutional development

  • Advising on business plans and marketing strategies for training institutes
  • Advising on adopting quality improvement processes
  • Facilitating change in organizational culture and management practices
  • Assisting in setting up networks between institutes
  • Facilitating change in institutional relations
  • Conducting joint research on effective training to build the evidence base

Staff development

  • Developing human resources policies and strategies for appropriate deployment and retention of training institute staff and to enhance good performance
  • Strengthening capacity through courses and on-the-job training
  • Equipping teachers with skills in training methods
  • Assisting with developing learning materials
  • Advising on career development of teachers and performance management strategies
  • Fostering teacher exchanges between KIT and institutes in the South

Example

Technical assistance to the National Institute of Public Adminstration (NIPA) in Zambia in preparing and implementing a health management course
Support includes training of trainers and supervisors, participatory development of course modules, and development of a mechanism for student assessment. This work is a follow-up to support provided to the Pan African Institute for Development, Eastern and Southern Africa (PAID-ESA). This institute was responsible for developing and implementing a District Health Management course in the context of health sector reforms from 1995 to 2001.
