Disease management and control

The Millennium Development Goals stress the importance of addressing major and debilitating diseases and initiatives such as the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and other targeted donor policies have led to a greater availability of resources. Low-income countries have trouble absorbing these extra resources, however, because of weak public health care systems.

Approach

Using experience in disease control, health systems development, sector-wide approaches, human resource development and health economics, KIT strengthens the in-country capacity in lower and middle income countries to develop cost-effective, integrated and sustainable services. Special attention is paid to improved access and the utilization of treatment and prevention services. Community empowerment, prevention of disability and rehabilitation, stigma alleviation, gender equity and client-centred approaches in service delivery are some of the specific focus areas of our work.

Example

International Consortium for Research and Action Against health-related Stigma (ICRAAS)
Coordination of an international consortium of institutes, organizations and individuals involved in research and action on health-related stigma. The central aim of the ICRAAS is to reduce health-related stigma and its harmful consequences, including discrimination and social exclusion.
