Diagnosing malaria without blood sampling
In a programme sponsored by the European Union, KIT has joined other research institutes in developing a diagnostic test for malaria that does not require blood sampling. At present, a malaria infection can only be diagnosed through microscopic blood smear analysis, which requires time as well as expertise.

Masters in Health and Development
21 Masters of Public Health. That is the result of the 42nd edition of the International Course in Health Development (ICHD). The diplomas were awarded on 15 September last. This diploma enables the participants, originating from various corners of the world, to contribute to an integrated, multi-disciplinary approach to health issues in their own countries.

Inside Iran - A Retrospective of Khosrow Hassanzadeh
This autumn, KIT's Tropenmuseum presents an overview of the oeuvre of the well-known Iranian painter Khosrow Hassanzadeh (b. 1963). Hassanzadeh's paintings focus on political and social developments in his country, and tie in intimately with his own personal experiences and vision. The exhibition features a series of paintings depicting Hassanzadeh's period as a frontline soldier during the Iran-Iraq war.

African ginger in traditional Dutch cake
Forty tons of dried ginger: that's what a number of small-scale Sierra Leone farmers will be supplying to the Dutch spice company Unifine, next year. This delivery marks the start of a long-term supply relation between the company and these farmers. In the aftermath of the civil war in Sierra Leone, this will enable them to rebuild their livelihoods. KIT brought the two parties together.

Gene technology: a solution to world food supply and rural poverty?
Can agriculture, using new genetic cultivation techniques, put an end to hunger and poverty? How can smallholder farmers in Africa in particular benefit from genetic modification? And what are the environmental effects? These and other issues will be addressed at the conference From Green to Gene Revolution?, to be held on Tuesday 10 October next in Wageningen. The conference is the 78th edition of the International Conference on Agriculture and Development (ICAD).

Information support for fight against AIDS in Eastern Europe
The health organization AFEW has commissioned KIT to help expand and improve knowledge management activities relating to the fight against AIDS in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. KIT information specialists will, among other efforts, expand AFEW's electronic library.

The Zanzibar House of Wonders Museum - a case study
Zanzibar is a small island off the East African coast with a grand history. Its national museum is located in the beautiful House of Wonders. Between 2000 and 2005 this 19th-century Sultan's Palace was converted into a museum to display the history and culture of Zanzibar and the Swahili Coast. KIT was closely involved in this project. This bulletin describes the project and the issues confronted: obtaining foreign assistance, circumventing pitfalls of dependency, and marrying self-reliance and partnership.

Targeted support crucial in treatment of AIDS patients
Access to so-called antiretroviral AIDS medicines is in itself not a guarantee for a successful treatment. Without targeted support, patients take their medicine irregularly, which undermines the therapeutic effect. This has been demonstrated by a study conducted in three African countries by the World Health Organization, the University of Amsterdam and KIT. The report was presented at the International AIDS conference held in Toronto last August.

Violence against women and girls
Breaking the silence on gender-based violence (GBV). That is the theme of the latest issue of Exchange, the international magazine on HIV/AIDS and sexual health for workers in the field. Focus is on sexual and domestic violence against women and girls and the physical, psychological, social and economic effects. Other subjects covered in this issue: the promotion of the female condom in Burundi and the interrelatedness of religion, gender and HIV prevention in Mozambique.
