Exhibition ’24-Hour Indonesia’

Interview op straat

The exhibition features a total of four hours of film footage. The course of the day unfolds over 12 minutes on huge screens. Viewers see at a glance what daily life is like at the eight different locations at the same time of day.

In addition, visitors can learn more about the eight locations. Film clips feature people going about their daily routine in each place. At work, at school, in a restaurant or in their free time. A wide variety of events are portrayed, from raising the national flag to working in a prawn cracker factory, to dyed chicks and the gay scene in Surabaya.

The films were shot not only at fixed locations but also ‘en route’: on foot, by car or by boat. During the filming, people were interviewed about their lives, families and work. The film footage is part of an audio-visual archive that the KITLV compiled on everyday life in Indonesia in the 21st century. The idea is to have people film at the same locations every four years over the course of 100 years. This exhibition presents a selection from this tremendous body of material from the first four years.

The eight locations featured are: Payakumbuh (a rural town in the mountains of West Sumatra), Kawal (a fishing village and tourist centre on a small island south of Singapore), the capital Jakarta, Sintang (an isolated rural town in West Kalimantan), Delanggu (a Javanese village), the harbour city Surabaya, Bittuang (a village in the mountains of Sulawesi) and finally Ternate, a rural town on a small Moluccan island.
