Humans of Amsterdam and KIT Campus present a photo series on homelessness in Amsterdam
An impactful photo series on homelessness in Amsterdam is on display at KIT Café until the summer. With this series, photographer Debra Barraud aims to show what it means to live without a permanent roof over one’s head, and how this issue affects people from all walks of life.
Since 2012, Debra Barraud has been portraying residents of Amsterdam through her project Humans of Amsterdam. Over the years, the project has grown into an online platform with more than 800,000 followers. Through her photography and storytelling, Debra reaches millions of people each month, giving a human and recognizable face to the city of Amsterdam.
While working as a street photographer, Debra noticed a growing number of people experiencing homelessness in the city. In collaboration with Issue Killers, a youth program of KIT Campus, she documented over the past year the stories of people who are or have been homeless in Amsterdam. What began as a focus on young people struggling to find housing evolved into a broader series revealing that homelessness has many causes and affects society as a whole.
This series was made possible thanks to the openness of all interviewees and with the support of Stichting de Mystifiers, Stichting Here to Support, Jesse Borch Jensen, and KIT Campus / Issue Killers.
The photos can be viewed free of charge during the opening hours of the KIT Café.
With special thanks to Amsterdam East District and the De Groot Fund.
