Enhancing cross-border trade between Benin and Nigeria

News

Bart de Steenhuijsen Piters is currently in Benin as member of the steering board the project ‘ Approche Communale pour le Marché Agricole’.

Together with project partners IFDC, CARE and BECG, KIT implements this project to enhance the cross-border trade of agricultural products from Benin to Nigeria. This is done by building trade capacities, strengthening local communities, investing in strategic infrastructures, and lobbying for a better trade environment, such as less customs’ checks (now 32 till Lagos).

As part of our trip we visited a maize market where buyers, both women and men, prepare for selling maize stocks to wholesalers. The project will invest in improved warehouses and drying facilities, so that traded volume and quality will increase, impacting on the revenues of the members of the trade association and smallholder maize producers.
