- Medical doctor with background on sexual and reproductive health & rights and health equity
I am Dagmawit Workagegnehu, a medical doctor from Ethiopia with a deep-rooted passion for sexual and reproductive health and rights and health equity (SRHR). Previously, I served as Family Planning Officer at the Sidama National Regional State Health Bureau in Ethiopia, where I coordinated regional level maternal health and family planning programs in the region. Later, I managed national SRHR programs funded by UNFPA at Deutsche Stiftung Weltbevölkerung(DSW) Ethiopia, to improve the lives of marginalized young people, including female sex workers and vulnerable young people working in industrial parks. In addition, I also founded www.Safer-SRHR.com , a local initiative that focuses on amplifying youth voices in SRHR and decision-making processes in Ethiopia.
Impact of deeply ingrained cultural norms on young girls in Ethiopia
In my work, I encountered deeply ingrained cultural norms that limit young girls’ decision-making power regarding their reproductive health as well as limited access to comprehensive sexual education. In addition I see the strong influence of anti-rights movements that restrict bodily autonomy for women and girls. My decision to pursue a Master in Health Equity stems from my firsthand experience witnessing the profound inequalities in access to health services, particularly in sexual and reproductive health. Having worked in underserved communities and with vulnerable populations in Ethiopia, I understand how these inequities are deeply intertwined with social determinants such as gender, education, and economic status.

Becoming a thought leader
This year, it’s my personal goal is to become a thought leader in health equity, translating the knowledge gained from the Masters into impactful action. I aim to collaborate with global health organizations to create sustainable solutions that improve SRHR for vulnerable populations, while continuing to advocate for youth leadership and gender equality in health policy.
