My name is Dayib Ahmed Mahamed, from Kenya, I studied Bachelor of Science public health in Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. I work since years as humanitarian health worker in different countries and in different levels and settings.

I have worked at health facility level, on project management and on national levels as health cluster co-coordinator. In that role I was tasked to ensure coherent and effective humanitarian response in partnership with all actors in the country affected by the crisis. I have worked in Kenya, Somalia and in South Sudan and Afghanistan.

I worked in protracted humanitarian crisis context which had political instability, widespread insecurity, disease outbreaks and recurring climatic disasters which led to weakening of these countries’ health system and contributed to have some of the lowest health indicators in the world.

Focus on health system strengthening

I chose to study the Master of Public Health to advance my knowledge and skills in Public Health and to help me address diverse public health issues in humanitarian context. My ambition is to become a global public health leader with focus on health system strengthening.

The experience I gained from the countries I worked in led me to look for a reputable institution which has experience in research and teaching in rebuilding disrupted health systems. I will use the knowledge and skills gained during this Masters programme to address diverse global public health challenges,  be able to develop context specific approaches to rebuild and strengthen the health systems, better coordinate, lead and prioritize health responses specially in complex emergencies in the world which are increasing every year.
