Medical Doctor

My name is  Abel Zangre, a Medical Doctor from Burkina Faso, deeply committed to advancing health equity and strengthening health systems across West Africa. Since 2022, I have been serving as Head of the Emergency Department at the Regional Hospital of Ziniaré, where I coordinate multidisciplinary teams to deliver critical and life-saving care.

I also volunteered part-time with the International Red Cross Medical Center, supporting emergency and humanitarian medical missions.

Reduce preventable deaths in Burkina Faso

Every day in the emergency room, I witness how economic hardship and limited access to quality healthcare lead patients to abandon medical treatment and turn to traditional remedies. Tragically, this often results in preventable deaths. These experiences have profoundly shaped my motivation to pursue the Master of Public Health at KIT Royal Tropical Institute to understand how strategic health policy, system design, and leadership can translate into accessible, affordable, and equitable healthcare for all.

Through this Master’s programme, I aim to gain the analytical, managerial, and policy-design skills necessary to contribute to the implementation of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in Burkina Faso. I aspire to return home equipped to influence national health reforms that bridge the gap between policy and practice, and between urban and rural care.

Every day in the emergency room, I witness how economic hardship and limited access to quality healthcare lead patients to abandon medical treatment and turn to traditional remedies. Tragically, this often results in preventable deaths.

Challenging perspectives and expanding network

My experiences both as a medical doctor and as a volunteer during COVID-19 pandemic, deepened my conviction that resilient health systems require not only clinical expertise but also strong governance, evidence-based policy, and community-centered approaches.

My personal goal this year is to challenge my perspectives, expand my global network thanks to the diversity of my colleagues’ backgrounds and experiences, and develop innovative solutions based on combining my experience with that of my colleagues, which will allow me to lead transformative change in the Burkinabe health system.  Health must be a right in Burkina Faso, Africa and in the whole world and I am determined to be part of the generation that makes this a reality.
