Background
Medical Doctor, specializing in community medicine at the Sudan Medical Specialization Board (SMSB), teaching assistant University of Gezira, Doctor at Gezira State Ministry of Health
My name is Amal Hassan, and I am a medical doctor from Sudan, currently specializing in community medicine. I hold a position as a teaching assistant at the University of Gezira. However, following the outbreak of armed conflict in Khartoum, which triggered the world’s largest displacement crisis, Gezira State became home to many displaced individuals.
For the Gezira State Ministry of Health, I took the initiative to support the burdened health system, which was now under severe strain. I specifically addressed sexual and reproductive health issues affecting internally displaced persons.

Deprioritization of sexual and reproductive rights in times of crisis in Sudan

During times of crisis, it becomes evident that the sexual and reproductive health component is often deprioritized. This was evident during the Sudan health crisis. The lack of policies that prioritize funding for sexual and reproductive health, along with insufficient measures to ensure the continuity of essential services —particularly those related to gender-based violence — delays critical responses and exacerbates the situation.

Identify problems and address needs of affected populations

These challenges ignited in me a deep responsibility toward the sexual and reproductive health of the marginalized women in my country and inspired me to pursue a specialized course in sexual and reproductive health (SRHR). This way I hope to better identify problems and address the needs of affected populations. I believe that the knowledge and skills I am developing at KIT, a global leader in SRHR, will equip me with the competencies necessary to make a meaningful impact.

Additionally, I aim to enhance my approach to implementing health projects by refining my strategic planning for interventions focused on improving SRHR and addressing harmful practices. I will involve scientific evidence, best practices, and local contexts into my work.
