Background
Public health professional focusing on HIV/AIDS interventions and malaria with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and an MBA in Marketing
I am Emmanuel Len Opio, a public health professional from Uganda with over 10 years of experience, primarily focusing on HIV/AIDS interventions and, to a lesser extent, malaria. I worked with local NGOs, community-based organizations (CBOs) and individual grassroots actors to design, implement, and monitor health interventions for individuals at high risk of contracting and transmitting HIV in both rural and urban settings across Uganda.

Making HIV/AIDS and malaria interventions accessible to all Ugandans

In the past years, I expanded my focus to include research and advocacy efforts aimed at addressing significant barriers to the availability and accessibility of quality healthcare services. In addition to serving the general population, I worked closely with high-risk and vulnerable groups, including adolescent girls and young women, persons with disabilities, sex workers, fishing communities, injecting drug users, prisoners, sexual minorities, and all categories of people living with HIV.
For instance, I led the HIV/AIDS Community-Led Monitoring research and advocacy project in northern Uganda, a region previously affected by war.

Enhancing credibility to serve vulnerable populations

During my work, I recognized that my educational background, which includes a bachelor’s degree in Economics and an MBA in Marketing, left me with a gap in specialized public health knowledge and technical skills. Graduating with the MPH from the prestigious KIT Institute will not only bridge this gap but also enhance my credibility within civil society, local government, and national stakeholders.

This will enable me to engage partners more effectively through participation in research, advocacy, and technical working groups. Additionally, the knowledge and skills I acquire will empower me to strengthen the capacity of both large and small organizations that serve vulnerable populations, including the Boundless Development Initiative.
