Background
Preventive, Community and Social Medicine

My name is Emna Hariz, and I am from Tunisia. I am a medical doctor and resident in preventive, community and social medicine. Throughout my career, I have been particularly interested in public health and epidemiology, fields that allow me to combine my love for mathematics with my passion for social sciences.

Connecting Tunisia with international expertise

Unfortunately, the development of public health in Tunisia is still limited. One of the various health challenges in Tunisia I experienced first hand is how the lack of collaboration with international organizations and knowledge institutions blocks young doctors from benefiting from global expertise. This rigidity contributes to the ongoing brain drain, as many Tunisian doctors leave for better opportunities abroad, resulting in a shortage of healthcare professionals, particularly in rural and neglected regions of the country.
One of the other major issues we face in Tunisia is the fragmentation of health data, which is often divided by region and team due to internal conflicts. Through the teamwork experience and the multidisciplinary approach at KIT, I hope to learn the soft skills necessary to improve collaboration and reduce these tensions.

The epidemiology track in this Master’s program will give me the tools to implement solutions to public health challenges in Tunisia.

Public health education and updating national data system

The lack of comprehensive public health education in Tunisia is one of the main reasons I applied for this Master’s program, especially since Tunisia does not offer a Master’s in Public Health. I see this course as an opportunity to enhance my knowledge and acquire the necessary skills to drive change in my country.

My long-term goal is to help create a centralized, updated national data system that accounts for human rights and social determinants of health. Additionally, this Master’s program will deepen my understanding of global public mental health, an area closely aligned with my work.
