Background
Medical doctor, specialized in cesarean sections; planning services; neonatal care services

I am Filmon N. Yohannes, a medical doctor from Eritrea. Over the past four years, I have dedicated my career to working in resource-limited settings in Eritrea and South Sudan. My work primarily focused on maternal and child health in a remote district of Eritrea.

Scarcity of specialists and obstetricians in remote Eritrean hospitals

In Eritrea, the scarcity of specialists and the absence of obstetricians in remote hospitals significantly hinder access to vital healthcare services. Pregnant women often face difficult journeys to distant hospitals for emergency care, exposing inequity in healthcare access. After completing my medical training, I focused on maternal obstetric care, which has been instrumental in reducing maternal and neonatal deaths in my district.

A pivotal moment occurred when I had to operate on a mother who arrived six hours late due to treacherous roads and inadequate transportation options.

Committed to saving lives of mothers and children

My decision to pursue a Master’s degree stems from my desire to create a lasting impact as a public health professional. Upon completing my Master’s, I envision myself working in East Africa’s low-resource settings, committed to saving the lives of mothers and children. I dream of a world where every pregnant woman can deliver safely and every child has access to equitable healthcare, ensuring they grow up healthy and thriving.
