- Background
- Pharmacist, specialized in public health and emergency supply chain management
My name is Mona Ahmed B. Babikir. I am a Sudanese pharmacist with experience in public health and national emergency supply chain management. My journey began in facility-based pharmacies, where I provided direct patient-centered care. I engaged with many communities and recognized how various factors can influence and limit an individual’s health and well-being. To expand this understanding, I joined the Ministry of Health, where I gained valuable experience, exploring the functions of the health system, and contributing to interventions and evaluations at both national and sub-national levels
Sudan’s fragile health system grappling with immense challenges
During my time at the Ministry of Health, I had the privilege of playing active roles in emergency response efforts during critical challenges, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing armed conflict. These experiences exposed me to the fragility of the health system, which was already marked by fragmented revenue streams, inadequate financing, and significant inequalities in access to healthcare, distribution of facilities, workforce allocation, and resources.
As I write this, my colleagues in Sudan’s emergency response department are grappling with the immense challenges of addressing widespread population displacement and fatal disease outbreaks.

“ This opportunity is not only investment in my future but also represents a valuable contribution to my war-torn country, offering a platform to highlight the ongoing crisis while also advancing the empowerment of women. ” ”
Contributing to recovery and policy reform
I am confident that the knowledge and professional skills I am acquiring through this master’s program, which is specifically designed to address complexities in low-resource settings along with the international exposure, will equip me to actively contribute to the recovery and policy reform of Sudan’s health system.
