Nelea Swai
My name is Nelea Swai, I am a Medical Doctor from Tanzania. I have a five year experience in a government referral hospital at Iringa region. I was stationed at the Internal Medicine department and provided health care to people with either communicable diseases, non-communicable diseases or both.
Tanzania is facing a double if not triple burden on her health system, we are still fighting to eradicate most of the communicable diseases and yet there is an exponentially rise in non-communicable diseases. My experience as a Medical Doctor has taught me the necessity of public health.

While working I realized how many of the deaths, I saw were attributed to delays in changing unhealthy lifestyles, receiving basic health advice and poor health systems. There are a lot of challenges that people with non-communicable diseases face in my country, which leads most of them to seek medical attention at a late stage. This is why I would like to help and contribute to the efforts of the universal health coverage especially for people with chronic illnesses.
Gain in-depth knowledge and skills
The Masters in International Health at KIT Royal Tropical Institute will help me gain in-depth knowledge and skills on Control strategies on Non Communicable Diseases and Health policy and Financing. My ambition is to work with the Ministry of Health and contribute to health policy formulation, especially policies that address the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases and their integrated approach. This will be attainable through promotive activities, prevention services, care and treatment and rehabilitation services.
