Celebrating Global Health Excellence: 2025 Eijkman Medal Awarded at the Joep Lange Chair & Fellows Symposium
We are delighted to announce the recipient of the 2025 Eijkman Medal, honouring outstanding contributions to global health with a strong connection to the Netherlands. The award ceremony took place today as part of the Joep Lange Chair & Fellows Symposium at De Balie in Amsterdam.
About the winner
This year’s laureate, Prof. Fitsum Tadesse, has made remarkable advances in the field of biology, transmission, and control of malaria in Africa. Currently, he is a research leader at the Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia and visiting professor at Radboud UMC, Nijmegen. Through multidisciplinary approaches combining entomology, epidemiology, genomics, and policy engagement, he has significantly influenced regional malaria control strategies and health policy.
According to the jury, he stood out for the societal impact of his work and exceptional efforts in capacity building.
Although living in Ethiopia and unable to attend the award ceremony in person, Prof. Tadesse received the medal in a personal moment captured on film. Teun Bousema met him at the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH) Annual Meeting, held in Toronto from November 9-13, 2025 and presented the award on behalf of the committee. Watch the presentation in the video below.
We warmly congratulate Prof. Tadesse on this well-deserved recognition.
