New Coalition Agreement Highlights Global Health; Strong Leadership is Needed
At the end of January, the new coalition agreement by Democrats 66 (D66), People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) and Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) set the course for the Netherlands’ international engagement. While the agreement recognises the importance of Official Development Assistance (ODA) and global health, strong leadership in the next 4 years will be essential to turn ambition into impact.
A new video looks back at the Health and Prosperity: Stronger Together through Global Health Investment event, offering a timely reminder of why global health matters. In a world shaped by conflict, pandemics, antimicrobial resistance, climate change and geopolitical instability, health cannot be treated as a standalone sector. It is a foundation for stability, shared security and long-term prosperity. Investing in global health saves lives, strengthens economies and protects health in the Netherlands and beyond.
The event was organised at the end of December by KIT Institute in collaboration with Aidsfonds, Cordaid, KNCV TB Plus, Philips and The ONE Campaign. It brought together representatives from government, civil society, academia, the private sector and Members of Parliament to explore global health through the lenses of security, innovation, economic resilience, crisis and conflict settings, and multilateral cooperation.
Speakers included Elles van Ark (MP CDA), Suzanne Kröger (MP PvdA-GroenLinks), Peter Derrek Hof (Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs), Krystal Birungi (Target Malaria Uganda), Marion Koopmans (Erasmus MC), Frank Cobelens (Amsterdam UMC / AIGHD, Roos Barth (Centraal Militair Hospitaal), Edward Monchen (i+solutionst) and Lyle Muns (Aidsfonds).
