People who survive sexual violence in conflict need sexual and reproductive health services
KIT Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) is deeply concerned about the failure of the United Nations Security Council to acknowledge the need of survivors of sexual violence in conflict to receive sexual and reproductive health services.
KIT welcomes the adoption of the UN security council Resolution 2467 on Sexual Violence in Conflict for stressing the importance of addressing sexual violence in conflict. However, KIT considers it regrettable that the section highlighting the need for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) has been removed.
The resolution emphasises much needed prevention and protection, and refers to psychological, social, and medical support. Nevertheless, the adopted version of the Resolution fails to acknowledge the need for full sexual and reproductive health services. This includes access to family planning and emergency contraception, safe abortion, and medicines to prevent STIs and HIV. Neglecting to acknowledge the need for these services means neglecting the most crucial needs of survivors of sexual violence in conflict.
KIT calls upon UN member states and organisations involved in care for survivors of sexual violence in conflict to ensure that the full range of Sexual and Reproductive Health services and rights are offered and respected for all women and men.
