The very first ECTMIH Academy will take place on Sunday, 19 November 2023, in Utrecht, a day before the European Conference on Tropical Medicine and International Health (ECTMIH 2023). The ECTMIH Academy is open to all delegates and to people who are not attending the conference! 

The day of pre-conference workshops will start at 0900, and will cover a wide range of competencies and skills that global health professionals need. There will be sessions on finding funds for research, partnerships, storytelling and getting your work published. KIT’s advisors, Sandra Alba, Hannah Kabelka and Marielle Le Mat, will also be hosting workshops on research integrity and youth participatory research.

We’ve provided the space for 85 students from our current class of Master’s of Public Health and Master’s of International Health programmes and the Netherlands Course on Global Health and Tropical Medicine (NTC) to join the ECTMIH Academy.

“There is such an attractive programme with very skilled facilitators that we felt it would be so valuable and worth going on a Sunday,” enthuses Francine Egberts, coordinator of the Master’s programmes at KIT and member of the Education Committee for ECTMIH.

“The ECTMIH Academy is organised specifically so young professionals can strengthen their professional skills and network. We see it as an opportunity that should not be missed,” she adds.

Why are our students going?

We asked Bethlehem Loulseged, a master’s student who will join the ECTMIH Academy, why she plans to join the workshops and what she’s looking forward to learning. Bethlehem is an obstetrician and gynecologist at a leading hospital in Ethiopia.

1. Professional development

“It’s an extremely important opportunity for the integration of professionals in global and planetary health with those who aspire to work in this arena. It showcases the work that has been done, the successes, and more importantly where there’s room for improvement. This experience will guide our work and ensure the development of the profession,” she replies.

2. The workshops!

Bethlehem is especially looking forward to the workshops on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), and since it’s an important aspect of her work, she’s also keen to join the workshop on activism and academia.  “Health goes beyond the individual and is profoundly affected by the political, economic, and social environment. It demands activism, and as a clinician I’m an advocate for my patients,” explains Bethlehem.

3. The networking opportunity

According to Bethlehem, the ECTMIH encourages various stakeholders with a global mindset, and a goal to contribute to a just and sustainable health system to be a part of this event. “I believe the interactions with such a diverse group will undoubtedly provide a learning experience- even outside the workshop setting,” she concludes.
