It is clear that there are many sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) issues around the world that need addressing. This course is designed with this purpose in mind: you will engage with current evidence to analyse SRHR responses, and do this in particular through lenses of equity, accountability, and participation. In so doing, you will further your understanding of the role of advocacy in improving SRHR responses. This course is for SRHR professionals who are seeking to co-create ways forward with the challenges they might be experiencing themselves. It will enable you to translate principles of equity and sound SRHR responses into practice.

Improving sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) continues to be high on the global public health agenda. It discusses equity, voice, accountability and participation in the organisation of responses, with a focus on ensuring and advocating for equitable services for marginalized groups. This course will enable you to translate principles of sound SRHR responses into practice.

Building on notions of rights and equity, this course explores how to address diverse SRHR needs in various settings. In this course, participants will use recent evidence to analyse gaps and opportunities in organizing equitable responses to specific SRHR matters, such as adolescent and youth SRHR, family planning, maternal and newborn health, gender based violence, HIV/ART services, menstrual health, and more. In addition to such specific issues, participants will analyse responses from the perspectives of stigma and discrimination, client-centeredness, gender transformative approaches, accountability and participation. Through co-creation exercises, participants will identify and conclude on key principles of equitable SRHR responses.

Participants in this course will particularly develop their skills on advocating for improved SRHR for communities and people who can be disproportionately affected by inequalities in society, such as people living with disabilities, HIV, specific gender/sexual identities, and displaced people in humanitarian and fragile settings. This course can be taken as part of the MPH-HE SRHR track or as a stand-alone short course. Participants will leave with advanced knowledge and skills essential for navigating, analysing, and advocating for equitable and comprehensive SRHR responses.

it was not until I participated in the SRHR Response short course at KIT that I realised the extent of the impact I could have on society through advocacy and action. The course opened my eyes to new perspectives and approaches in addressing SRHR issues, and I felt a renewed sense of purpose and responsibility towards my community and their suffering due to a lack of adequate SRHR service. Reflecting on my journey and the knowledge gained from the course, I am filled with a mix of emotions – gratitude for the opportunity to learn and grow, regret not having done more sooner, and excitement for the possibilities that lie ahead. I am eager to apply the skills and insights acquired during the course to advocate for better SRHR services in my community and beyond. I look forward to continuing my journey in promoting SRHR and contributing to a healthier and more equitable society.
