Strengthening Vietnam’s capacity to prevent HIV/AIDS


KIT Royal Tropical Institute and the Hanoi School of Public Health developed a Master’s programme to strengthen Vietnam’s capacity to prevent HIV/AIDS. Vietnamese students started the study programme in Vietnam, studying two modules at the Hanoi School of Public Health. Directly after that they continued their studies at KIT, in the Netherlands. Students participated in modules with emphasis on HIV and AIDS in the Master of Public Health at KIT, together with a multinational and multicultural group of students. Towards the end of the programme they returned to Vietnam, to complete two more modules at the Hanoi School of Public Health and their thesis. The programme culminated in a thesis defense in the first year with an oral exam at the HSPH with examiners from the Netherlands. The year thereafter the students defended their thesis through video-conferencing, with independent international examiners.

Results of the programme

Already eight students graduated from this innovative programme, while two more are expected to graduate.

KIT assisted the Hanoi School of Public Health in the accreditation of selected modules with the tropEd, Network for Education in International Health – thereby assuring quality of the education and the modules. Adjustments to learning objectives, content and examination methods were made to different modules, in order for the modular programme alignment and to assure quality. The degree was provided by the Free University Amsterdam, VU/KIT.

    KIT Royal Tropical Institute provides tailor-made training to clients such as educational and research institutes, NGOs and local or national governments and ministries across the globe. By bringing together people from different countries and regions, KIT’s international courses create a forum for linking and exchanging experiences among a broad range of development practitioners.  Finally, through training, consultancy and coaching services, KIT’s Intercultural Professionals unit provides a comprehensive approach to effective intercultural communication and cooperation. By demonstrating the value of cultural awareness and sensitivity, culture-specific insights and intercultural competencies, Intercultural Professionals helps NGOs, governments, corporate entities, leaders & professionals to enhance their business offering and integrate inclusive policies into their global or local operations.
