KIT Cocoa Living Income Questionnaire

KIT Institute has for long been at the forefront of living income research in the cocoa sector. Our experts have actively contributed to the Living Income Community of Practice (LICOP) and the Alliance on Living Income in Cocoa (ALICO), developing several tools and guidance documents for measuring the incomes of smallholder cocoa producers and evaluating living income initiatives.

To further promote alignment in living income assessments across the cocoa sector, KIT Institute is proud to make its Cocoa Living Income Questionnaire publicly available. This data collection instrument is specifically designed to help stakeholders—ranging from private companies to non-profit organizations—measure cocoa farm households’ incomes and assess the gap between actual income levels and living income standards. The questionnaire enables users to collect key data through a comprehensive household survey, covering variables such as cocoa production volumes, revenue and production costs as well as non-cocoa income.

This instrument is the result of multiple years of experience starting with the foundational study Demystifying the Cocoa Sector in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire (2018) and has since been refined through multiple living income studies. Many of these studies are evaluations of cocoa sustainability programs of private sector companies in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana. An extensive list of all the contributing projects and experts is included in the questionnaire. In 2024, the questionnaire was further updated as part of the Cocoa Household Income Study, a sector-wide effort to create a harmonized methodology for measuring living income in the cocoa sector (see the project page for more information and acknowledgements).

The KIT Cocoa Living Income Questionnaire is compatible with the open-source mobile data collection platform ODK. It is available in English and French and contains all the questions, answer options and underlying logic to run on the ODK Platform. While the current version is tailored to the cocoa sectors in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana, users can adapt it to other contexts and research objectives. Choice options should be adjusted to the local context (e.g. education levels, income sources, production seasons, land tenure arrangements) and modules can be added for additional analyses (e.g. production practices, access to inputs and services, well-being). To fit other sectors (e.g. coffee, cashew), the instrument will require additional adjustments (e.g. production steps, work arrangement).
