This research builds on the outcomes of several scoping efforts, seminars and networking meetings on youth and agriculture in rural areas as well as the consortium’s broader experience in working with agricultural cooperatives.
The study underscores the critical need to develop additional knowledge with respect to youth inclusion in agricultural cooperatives.
Providing insights
This explorative study aimed to contribute to current knowledge on youth in agricultural cooperatives by providing insights directly from youth (young women and men, both cooperative members and non-members) in Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. The findings presented in this report take into account the gender dynamics at play. The different socio-economic realities amongst young women and men – which are critical in determining how easily and under what conditions they can access key resources, such as knowledge, land, and finance – were also highlighted. It was clear from the explorative study that it remains extremely difficult for youth to access these resources; they are even less accessible for young women.
Results
The report highlights the relevant literature reviewed by the authors during the research process and provides a general overview of youth in agriculture and the challenges and opportunities related to their engagement in agricultural cooperatives. Access to training and information, access to land and access to financial services were key motivations for youth to join an agricultural cooperative. However, the lack of these assets makes it difficult for youth to access agricultural cooperatives in the first place (due to membership criteria). Agricultural cooperatives can play a role in helping youth advance in the agricultural sector, but other stakeholders are needed as well.
