As the majority of cocoa producers in West Africa continue to earn far below a living income, the concept of living income has become central to discussions on sustainable cocoa. While efforts have traditionally focused on increasing cocoa productivity, there is growing recognition that income diversification is essential to reduce vulnerability to price volatility and climate shocks and to strengthen household resilience.

This study examines promising income-generating activities (IGAs) among cocoa-producing households in Côte d’Ivoire. It analyses four business models, highlighting key structural constraints and success factors. By focusing on relatively successful cases, the report provides practical insights to inform the design and implementation of IGA support programmes aimed at helping cocoa-farming households move closer to a living income.
