Drones for the delivery of medicines in hard to reach areas

Authors

The purpose of this project was to answer the question: What are the pros and cons of using drones for the delivery of medicines in hard to reach areas ? Are there good examples of using drones for that purpose in LMICs? What questions should one ask when deciding to fund this for the health sector?

Results

Though it is a relatively new sector which still needs to mature, significant advances are being made in the last few years. One project in particular stands out, a medicine delivery programme in Rwanda which supplies rural hospitals with blood and medicines on a patient specific basis. Key questions that should be considered include whether the technical capacity of the drone fits the use-case, how drones are integrated in wider health systems and create employment, and whether they are acceptable for the communities which they aim to serve.
