The purpose of this project was to give comments on the medical device miLOOP for cataract surgery and inform about the most used techniques for cataract surgery in LMICs

Results

miLOOP is a very recently developed medical device for phacoemulsification. The innovation behind this device is that it uses low energy with reduced pulsatile ultrasonic vibrations and less heat delivered to the eye compare to the standard phacoemulsification technique.
Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery’ (SICS), a suture-free technique that avoids phaco-emulsification and removes a cataract through two very small incisions, is as safe and effective as phacoemulsification. Another common procedure is conventional extracapsular cataract surgery (ECCE). Both ECCE and MSICS are economical in community eye care settings, but MSICS is economical and gives better uncorrected visual acuity in a greater proportion of patients.
