Elaine is a Brazilian psychologist with a master’s and PhD in Collective Health/Public Health. She is passionate about developing innovative research and educational strategies for health professionals in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC).
At Fiocruz (Brazilian Ministry of Health), from 2010 to 2020, she was involved with participatory research on mental health and health emergencies in LMIC, assessing scientific and mediatic production related to epidemics, and developing tools and strategies for public engagement and health workers training. As an Associate Professor at the University of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 2015 to 2020, she oversaw research projects, supervised PhDs, and taught courses in the fields of public health such as health emergencies, science and technology studies, health education, mixed methods, digital methods and their relevance to health and bioethics.
She has recently dedicated herself to understanding the role of technology (AI, algorithms, digital platforms and devices, etc.) in mediating the relationship between public actors and citizens through digital health interventions and how these shape public trust and promote health and sustainable living.
As one of the coordinators of KIT’s master’s programme in public health, her expertise in social sciences, qualitative methods, digital research, and public engagement in public health topics add to the Education Team’s advocacy for socially engaged science and its applicability in health-seeking behaviour and bioethics. Her experience in data sprints, workshops, hackathons, and similar hands-on strategies makes her comfortable to engage in active learning strategies.
