Scholarship Master in Public Health and Health Equity (MPH/HE)
Every year, the KIT Fund offers a limited number of scholarships to talented health professionals from low—and middle-income countries to study a Master’s programme at KIT Royal Tropical Institute. You can now apply for a KIT Fund scholarship for the academic year 2024-2025. Please check the requirements below before submitting your application. The scholarships are available thanks to support from foundations, organizations, and individuals who support the KIT Fund.

The scholarship is open to candidates who fulfil the general eligibility criteria for the KIT Scholarship, as written below. In addition, we would like to encourage the application of candidates from fragile states and with experience in public health in low-resource settings or working with disadvantaged populations. We also have scholarship opportunities for students from Uganda, Tanzania and Ethiopia, Indonesia.

These scholarships are open to applicants from low and middle-income countries. People from fragile states and Uganda, Tanzania and Ethiopia, Indonesia are especially encouraged to apply.
Programme
The scholarship candidate will study the Master in Public Health and Health Equity at KIT from September 2024 to August 2025.
Eligibility Criteria for KIT Fund Scholarships
This scholarship opportunity is open to candidates of the countries mentioned above. A candidate applying for the scholarship from KIT Fund must:
- Have been unconditionally admitted to KIT for the Master of Public Health and Health Equity 2024-2025. This means that the candidate must have met all the academic and administrative requirements set by KIT Institute and have received a letter of conditional admission.
- Is from a low- or middle-income country. People from fragile states, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Indonesia are especially encouraged to apply.
- Have proven interest and work experience on the aimed track, and/or clear plans to continue in this field based on motivation letter, curriculum vitae and essay.
- Not be employed by:
- a. a multinational corporation (e.g. Shell, Unilever, Microsoft);
- b. a large national and/or a large commercial organisation;
- c. a bilateral donor organisation (e.g. USAID, DFID, Danida, Sida, Dutch ministry of Foreign affairs, FinAid, AusAid, ADC, SwissAid);
- d. a multilateral donor organisation, (e.g. a UN organisation, the World Bank, the IMF, Asian Development Bank, African Development Bank, IADB);
- e. an international NGO (e.g. Oxfam, Plan, Care).
- Have a proven commitment for the public case (for example, work in remote rural areas or for disadvantaged populations).
- Work in a field where a study at KIT can make relevant contribution.
- Be in a position to introduce the newly acquired skills and knowledge in work.
- Be available full-time to pursue the course or program without interruption, and be physically and mentally able to participate in the entire programme at KIT in Amsterdam.
- Endorse the objectives and aims of the KIT Fund. The aims of the KIT Fund (and of the donor) cannot be achieved if the fellowship holder does not return to his or her home country. Therefore a student must return to his/her country of origin after graduation and contribute to improving the health situation in his/her country with the knowledge acquired during the master’s programme. Please note that scholarships holders will be asked to sign an agreement about this.
Candidates will be shortlisted for interviews considering country of origin, aiming for gender and track of interest balance.
Please do not apply for this scholarship if you already have applied before (for academic year 2024-2025) or if you are in the process of the KIT Fund partial scholarship right now!
More information on the amount scholarship
- The scholarship covers the tuition fee for MPH / HE to study at KIT in the academic year 2024-2025.
- Other costs included in the scholarship are: return flights from your home country to Amsterdam, monthly living allowance, accommodation, visa costs and health insurance (as indicated in the financial statement applicants received with their admission).
- Any other costs are the responsibility of the applicant.

Application procedure
Scholarship Application deadline: 24 May 2024, 12hrs Amsterdam time
- Only accepted applicants for the Master of Public Health and Health Equity for the academic year 2024-2025 can apply for this scholarship. Please note that this scholarship is only available for the full-time programme for the Master of Public Health and Health Equity.
- Make sure you fulfill all requirements before starting the application procedure. If you do not fulfill the requirements your application will unfortunately not be considered.
Procedure
Step 1: Obtain academic admission for the MPH-HE
Obtain academic admission for the MPH / HE. Only accepted applicants can apply for this scholarship. If you have not yet obtained academic admission to the masters programme please make sure to apply as soon as possible for admission in our online application system via the master’s programme webpage. (Please note that this scholarship is only available for the full-time programme for the Master of Public Health and Health Equity)
Step 2: Uploading 3 required documents
After you have been admitted to the masters programme, upload the following documents in your existing file to the KIT online application system:
- A motivation letter for KIT Fund (different from the motivation letter you uploaded for the application to the course). Upload your letter in your file in KIT online application system with clear title: ‘Your name, Motivation KIT Fund 2024-2025’. This letter should contain: Why you are applying to the KIT Fund? how you plan to use the skills acquired to the advantage of the public case? Please also indicate which track you are applying to.
- A short essay (500-700 words) describing a public health problem that you have experienced in the last two years that you would like to discuss in your thesis or address in the course. Explain how this problem has consequences for the community and the health system. Upload your essay in your file in the KIT online application system with clear title: ‘Your name, Essay KIT Fund 2024-2025’
- Your updated CV with contact information (e-mail, telephone numbers you can be easily reached on).
- Please note that your application will NOT be processed if these documents are not part of your application file and if the previous steps were not followed. Upload your documents in the online application system before 24 May 2024, 12 hrs CET.
- If you experience problems with the uploading of the 3 required documents for your scholarship application in the online application system, then please try a few times. You need to upload them under ‘Other documents’.
If you keep facing problems with uploading, you can send an e-mail with your 3 documents to courses@kit.nl. We are not able to process documents received after Friday 24 May 2024, 12.00 noon CET. Thank you for your understanding.
Step 3: Fill in the application form
After uploading the required documents in step 2, fill in the application form via the link below at the latest 24 May 2024, 12 noon CET.

After uploading the documents and submitting the form, your application is complete.
Review process
Complete applications will be reviewed in the last week of May 2024. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview via Zoom which will take place during the first week of June 2024.
A final selection is made in week 2 of June 2024. The selected applicant must agree to the KIT Fund’s rules and regulations and obligations for this scholarship within 8 days of being informed they were selected. Failure to do so will result in the scholarship being offered to the next candidate on the reserve list.
