Podcast: In conversation with Chantale Al-Lakis and Harry Coleman

KIT Institute, in partnership with the Gaza Health Initiative, is hosting the ‘Uniting Knowledge, Resources, and Solidarity: Gaza Health Initiative Conference Amsterdam’.

Welcome to the KIT Institute Podcast from Amsterdam, hosted by Bipasha van der Zijde, Content Strategist at KIT, who’s joined by Advisors Chantale Al-Lakis and Harry Coleman.

This year KIT is joining forces with the Gaza Health Initiative to address the rebuilding of Gaza’s health system which has been decimated over the last months.

Both Chantale and Harry are on the committee organising this conference.

The Gaza Health Initiative

For the last few months, we have been witnessing the destruction of the Gaza Strip. With no fully functioning hospitals in the region and an estimated 700 healthcare and aid workers who have lost their lives, medical facilities urgently need personnel, beds, medicine, equipment, and electricity

Recognising the urgency of the situation, a coalition of medical professionals, non-profit organisations, humanitarian actors, academics, and concerned individuals formed the Gaza Health Initiative (GHI).

Progress so far

The Initiative was launched with a conference in Amman, Jordan in February 2024 and one of the main outcomes was a report assessing the needs of the Gazan healthcare sector. This was followed by a second conference in Beirut, Lebanon, in June, focusing on the role of international law in protecting the health and human rights of Gazan people.

Chantale was at the conference in Amman and Harry joined the conference in Beirut. In this podcast, they talk about what they heard at these conferences and their key takeaways. Harry also touches upon what we can expect from the conference in Amsterdam.
