Intercultural Communication, New Residents, and the Netherlands


We are devoted to helping people from different cultural backgrounds approach each other with interest, understanding and respect—adding to their mutual benefit. In collaboration with local municipalities we provide training for newcomers to allow a smooth integration in the Dutch labour market, as well as training, coaching and consulting services for government agents and employers who work with newcomers.

The Netherlands and other EU member states have agreed to accommodate more asylum seekers. With the increase of new residents in Dutch society government-officials, employers and employees may encounter unfamiliar cultural and social norms—which our training can help you understand. Communication can be complicated by implicit assumptions from both sides and influenced by cultural backgrounds—and it may cause misunderstandings, frustration and even conflict. That’s why at KIT Intercultural Professionals, we passionately believe in the value of diversity and have programmes to help individuals and organisations gain the most out of intercultural opportunities.

Effective Communication with New Residents

Professionals in social services in The Netherlands often work with clients from a refugee background who have legal residency—or ‘status holders’—in the Netherlands. Culturally defined expectations about government services can lead to large communication differences in these interactions and may lead to misunderstandings about Dutch rules and regulations. This programme helps participants recognise and effectively bridge these potential differences.

Integrating into the Dutch Labour Market for New Residents

This training is aimed towards status holders that have recently arrived in The Netherlands to prepare them for the Dutch labour market. The programme helps create effective intercultural communication by making participants familiar with patterns of behaviour, underlying social norms and values.
