Launch of ISSD Africa

News

ISSD Africa has been launched! KIT advisors Peter Gildemacher and Willem Heemskerk are now in Nairobi, Kenya to facilitate the start of this two-year continental pilot programme to address seed sector challenges, notably on seed entrepreneurship, access to public varieties, domestic use of international seed conventions and treaties, the CAADP process in relation to seed, as well as the theme seed aid and governance. The five themes will be developed by corresponding working groups, two of which are coordinated by KIT.

ISSD Africa is a partnership with CDI-Wageningen UR and the Future Agricultures Consortium and is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs. The programme uses the Integrated Seed Sector Development (ISSD) approach, which aims to enhance access to quality seed by smallholder farmers. It integrates both formal and informal seed systems and fosters participation of both public and private actors in the development of demand-driven seed chains.
