Finagle’s laws of information: lessons learnt evaluating a complex health intervention in Nigeria
Evaluations cannot support evidence-informed decision making if they do not provide the information needed by decision-makers. In this article, we reflect on our own difficulties evaluating the Geo Referenced Infrastructure and Demographic Data for Development (GRID3) approach, an intervention that provides high-resolution demographic and geographical information to support health service delivery. GRID3 was implemented in Nigeria’s northern states to support polio (2012–2019) and measles immunisation campaigns (2017–2018).

Using a theory of change in monitoring, evaluating and steering scale-up of a district-level health management strengthening intervention in Ghana, Malawi, and Uganda – lessons from the PERFORM2Scale consortium
Since 2017, PERFORM2Scale, a research consortium with partners from seven countries in Africa and Europe, has steered the implementation and scale-up of a district-level health management strengthening intervention in Ghana, Malawi and Uganda. This article presents PERFORM2Scale’s theory of change (ToC) and reflections upon and adaptations of the ToC over time. The article aims to contribute to understanding the benefits and challenges of using a ToC-based approach for monitoring and evaluating the scale-up of health system strengthening interventions, because there is limited documentation of this in the literature.

Project on Prevention of Maternal Mortality Arising from Unsafe Abortion and Enhancing Access to Post-Abortion Care Through Advocacy – Kenya
This end evaluation covers the period from the start of the project (April 2019) until end of March 2022, which marked the end of three years of project implementation. The evaluation primarily focused on measuring the effects of the project for primary stakeholders (KOGS, implementing parties) and secondary stakeholders (actors the society aimed to influence). The effects of the project on tertiary stakeholders are qualitatively assessed in the communities targeted by KOGS. However, the project has been too short to measure community impact, in the sense of the number ofwomen accessing safe abortion services, the number of lives saved, and so on. The community component of the project was implemented in Kajiado County. This county was chosen because of the high levels of teenage and unwanted pregnancies that have been documented in the area.

The Underlying Gendered Factors Influencing Access to and Utilization of Skilled Birth Attendance: A Case Study in Ghana
Maternal mortality continues to be a major public health concern in Ghana where women still die from preventable maternal deaths. Advocating for safe Abortion – Mozambique
This end evaluation covers the full project period from the start (April 2019) until the end (March 2022). The evaluation focused on measuring the effects of the project for primary stakeholders (AMOG, implementing parties) and secondary stakeholders (actors the society aimed to influence). The effects of the project on tertiary stakeholders are beyond the scope of this evaluation because the aim of the project was to strengthen the societies, and influence policy and the attitudes of healthcare workers and the public at large.

In a life full of risks, COVID-19 makes little difference
Worldwide, the socioeconomic impacts of COVID-19 disproportionally affect vulnerable groups in society. This paper assesses responses to, and impacts of, the pandemic among mobile migrant populations who work in Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining (ASGM) in Suriname and French Guiana. These populations are characterized by poverty, informal or illegal status, and limited access to health care and information. Field research in Suriname (November 2020–January 2021) and French Guiana (January, May, June 2021) included qualitative interviews, informal conversations and observations, and a quantitative survey with 361 men and women in ASGM communities.

Advocacy for the Prevention of Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Due to Unsafe Abortion – Uganda
This evaluation includes an assessment of the relevance, effectiveness, efficiency and sustainability of the project. From its start, attention was given to strengthening AOGU with the intention that societies would continue to flourish after the grant ends. Therefore, the evaluation assessed the extent to which the societies were strengthened and the likelihood that this would be sustained. Similarly, when looking at programmatic sustainability, an assessment was formed of the likelihood of societies and networks continuing their work towards improving access to safe abortion. Finally, the scope of this evaluation includes the sustainability of the outcomes.
