Data mapping & visualisation

At KIT Royal Tropical Institute we use innovative data mapping and visualisation techniques to support data-driven decision making in the fields of sustainable economic development and health care.

We combine technical expertise in the fields of spatial statistics, geo-data management and impact evaluations with a broad content knowledge of numerous developmental sectors. At the core of our approach is the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software to identify and analyse spatial patterns in readily available – yet often underused – programme data. This provides development actors with fresh insight into the nature and performance of their interventions, while offering new visual tools to complement their traditional M&E and assessment activities. At the same time, it offers new perspectives on how we consider geographic contexts and the broader environments that contribute to development outcomes.

Data mapping for epidemiology

Over the last decade we have established a comprehensive track record in spatial epidemiology research and the development of GIS tools and services for disease control. Spatial epidemiology is a rapidly evolving field that identifies and analyses geographic variations in disease based on demographic, environmental, socioeconomic and risk factors. Advancements in the availability and quality of these data – coupled with improvements in GIS software and spatial statistics – has enabled us to develop new tools that visualize the nature of disease outbreaks and their underlying risk factors at the local level.
