Assessment of the social impact of the GAA “Best Aquaculture Practices” certification program

The Global Aquaculture Alliance developed the Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification standards for seafood processing plants, farms, hatcheries and feed mills. This assignment aims to assess the compliance with and effects of the social and labour standards of the BAP certification, and generate learning on how social change happens in aquaculture. The work includes the development of a theory of change, analysis of audit data, key informant interviews, focus groups and a Sprockler survey.
Role: Team leader, methodology development, analysis of case study findings, Sprockler survey.

Mid Term Review of Solidaridad’s 2016-2020 Advocacy for Change and Practice for Change Partnership Programmes

Solidaridad, an international network organization operating through regional centres across the globe, works on sector transformation for 13 commodities, to develop these sectors to become more sustainable and inclusive. The mid-term review focusses on two of its programs, which together span a portfolio of 44 projects. The review aims to document the expected and unexpected, positive and negative, outcomes and lessons learned of the strategy and approach as implemented in the project portfolio in the period 2016-2018, and make recommendations on adaptations to ensure that they achieves their planned outcomes in the period 2019-2020.
Role: Team leader, field visits for the Central and South American regional centres.

Gender transformative approaches and women focused technologies as a route to women’s empowerment and enhanced technology adoption in Bangladesh

Provided support to WorldFish researchers in the analysis of baseline and endline data of a project that tested gender transformative approaches and the introduction of a women-friendly technology, a gillnet for the harvest of small nutritious fish from aquaculture. The initial aim was to analyse the data available and write a journal article, but along the way the assignment changed due to data quality issues. The assignment then became the development of an internal report on the data quality issues and the analysis conducted so far, and the development of a study design protocol, including sampling description and methods and tools and data analysis plan, for a follow up assessment.
Role: quantitative data analysis, support in tools development and sampling framework for follow up study.

Assessment of the Local Service Provider model for rural advisory services in Bangladesh

Assessment of implementation of the LSP models in two projects in south-western Bangladesh to understand effectiveness in delivering services and development impact among fish farmers and providing sustainable business opportunities for service providers. Includes a survey (through mobile data collection) and in-depth interviews and focus groups.

Baseline for the ‘Inclusive Decisions at the Local Level’ (IDEAL) program

Establishment of a baseline for the IDEAL program (taking place in seven countries to capture the present capacities and processes of municipalities and how they are perceived by citizens. Included a survey (through mobile data collection) and qualitative focus group discussions.
Role: Implementation of the baseline assessment for Uganda; lead the field team, conduct data analysis and write report

Coaching of scientist to support the integration of gender into livestock research
2016 – 2017 / International Livestock Research Institute / Uganda
Froukje analysed the role of women in the pig value chain in Uganda. Specific activities included the provision of on-going support through skype and email to a scientist integrating gender into her work, and provide comments and guidance on written work.
