As a young lawyer, in 2000 she joined ING (a financial conglomerate that at the time had approximately 100,000 employees in over 64 countries) as a corporate trainee. She went on to work in various parts of the financial industry for ING (wholesale and retail banking, insurance, investment banking, mutual funds and derivatives) in several countries (NL, UK, HK, Brussels). She then became the regional head of legal for Central and Eastern Europe, responsible for advising boards at HQ and in several countries on risks and regulations of ING business. Laura was involved in hundreds of product introductions and in the development of new business and distribution initiatives (mainly in the field of life insurance and pensions) in emerging countries in eastern Europe experiencing turbulent times (including the financial crisis of 2008).
After years on the risk side of business, she became a new business developer and helped to set up health insurance businesses in Romania and Turkey from scratch.
Laura also served on the board of an organisation working on water and agriculture projects in Eastern Africa. For ING’s partners, Laura did consultancies and provided technical assistance in microfinance and inclusive insurance organisations in the Philippines, Tanzania and Bangladesh. Laura has also advised several startups on governance, business management and access to finance.
In addition to her current work at KIT, Laura also co-runs a city vineyard in the Netherlands.
