Mark Schneiders, CEO of KIT Royal Tropical Institute (KIT), is a seasoned financial-sector professional with a successful track-record in private equity, banking and consulting. Since June 2014 he has brought his extensive experience in international banking in Africa, Asia and South America into his role as head of KIT. He also draws on his previous leadership roles with ING, Amicorp and African Development Corporation.
Mr Schneiders’ experience with effective leadership achieved positive results with diverse teams in Africa, Latin America, and Europe. Furthermore he has extensive experience in emerging markets, including nine years of deep involvement across many African markets. That knowledge and his entrepreneurial skills help him create new corporate opportunities at KIT. In addition he brings together parties to form new ventures, such his leading involvement in the SDG House.
Mr Schneiders moves easily across cultures at all levels of society, while respecting local custom. He is fluent in French, Spanish, English, German, and Dutch, with a working knowledge of Portuguese. He also trained as a banker, lawyer, and at business school, which makes him at home in financial reporting, legal documentation and governance.
- Creation of a business partner network across Africa. Identified, negotiated and managed private equity investments in: Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria, South Sudan and Zambia. Produced at Presidential level a cash exit in Equatorial Guinea, with 34 per cent IRR.
- Built new markets from scratch, creating greenfield banks, which became prominent institutions in their countries.
- Successful issues management: restructured and merged banking operations; solved long outstanding problems at government and shareholder level.
- Effective supervisor: board member of BancABC; supervisory board member of CEPD—a sizeable Central European pharmaceutical retail group.
